- Puppies don’t know how to walk when they’re born, it can take up to 5 weeks for them to learn! Some figure out how to walk as early as two weeks. When learning to walk, puppies fall and stumble a lot just like human babies.
- The first 6 weeks of a puppies life they are very dependent on their mother. They want to stay very close to her. After 6 weeks the mother teaches her puppies to be more independent. It’s important a puppy stays with the mom until 8 or 10 weeks of age so she can teach them how to “be a dog.”
- If you’re not sure how big a mixed breed puppy will be, look at his paws. If you’re wondering if your puppy will ever grow into his paws chances are he’ll grow up to be on the bigger side.
- It’s never too early to start training your puppy. At 8 weeks old a puppy can learn basic obedience commands such as “sit”, “stay”, and “lie down.” Puppies go through a rebellious phase so it’s best to teach them commands ahead of time.
- Tip: When housebreaking a puppy take them outside or to their designated potty spot 15 after eating or drinking.
- Socializing a puppy is very important. Expose your puppy to new people, places and dogs until thy reach 16 weeks of age. Take your puppy on car rides and get them used to different environments. A puppy that is kept inside for the first few months will be stressed out when they go to a unfamiliar place. As always it’s important to make sure your puppy has age appropriate vaccines before going to new places to keep them healthy.
